FAQ

Does Stockbridge School have a campus separate from UMass?

No. Stockbridge is part of the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. Our physical space is in 115 Stockbridge Hall, but students have access to all the facilities on the campus at the University. (Yes, there is also a town of Stockbridge in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, but we're not there).

Where are classes held and how big are they?

Classes are held all over campus, and at University facilities located near campus. You have plenty of time to get from one place to another in the time allotted between classes. Class size varies-the largest lectures will have between 100 and 300 students, but lab sections will only have 20 to 25 students. Most classes have a number somewhere in between.

Can I transfer to a bachelor degree after I finish at Stockbridge?

Yes. The credits you earn while obtaining your associate of science degree at Stockbridge are transferable to a baccalaureate program. In fact, almost 40% of Stockbridge seniors go on for a four-year degree when they graduate from Stockbridge.

I'm older and have been out of high school and working for a number of years. Can I still apply?

Yes. We encourage you. About one third of Stockbridge students are what we call "non-traditional." You bring a wealth of experience with you to the curriculum you choose to pursue here.

Can I have a car on campus as a freshman?

Yes. You will need to purchase a parking sticker. Contact the Campus Parking Office at 413-545-0065. As an on-campus resident, though, you won't need a car for getting around campus, or the Pioneer Valley, for that matter. There is an extensive, convenient, free bus system which operates here.

Can I live off campus?

As a freshmen or sophomore you are required to live on campus unless you are married, a veteran, or commuting from your parent's or guardian's home within a 40-mile radius of the campus. Otherwise, if you want to live off campus, you need to apply for a housing exemption from the Housing Office, phone 413-545-2100.

Will I have internet access from my dorm room?

Yes. For $100 each semester you can get a UMAccess account. It will give you an e-mail account and access to UMass computers.

Does Stockbridge have a job placement service?

We encourage you to take advantage of our web site which lists various job opportunities and internship positions: http://www.umass.edu/stockbridge/jobnet/. We also sponsor an annual Job Fair in February. Employers are invited to attend and recruit Stockbridge students. There is a great network of alumni/ae out there eager to hire their own. And, by the way, the numbers are impressive: 100% job placement, and a wealth of opportunities from which to choose.

I'm interested in the Equine major. Can I board my horse at the farm on campus?

Yes, the Hadley Farm can now accommodate boarded horses belonging to second-year students. We can also give you the names of local farms which accept boarders. View the Hadley Farm Boarding information at http://www.umass.edu/vasci/equinepage/Publish/page5.html

Will I be placed in a job for my internship?

No. It is up to each individual student to find their own internship position. You can go far away, or stay close to home, but you do the arranging. If you need some suggestions, your internship advisor can help, or you can consult the web site: http://www.umass.edu/stockbridge/.
