The Fruit and Vegetable Crops major at Stockbridge School offers a program of study for those who wish to practice agriculture. It is our "traditional" agriculture major. Students acquire a basic knowledge of both plant and soil science along with training in specific agricultural techniques. The major offers some flexibility in designing a personal program of study, allowing students to focus on specific crop production, small business management, or produce marketing.

GreenhouseIf you enjoy working outdoors, like the idea of growing your own food, or producing it for others, or just want to be involved with growing plants, then explore a career in agriculture crop production. The industry is strong. The total value of crops sold in 2002 from U.S. farms was 94 billion dollars.

Opportunities in crop Production are growing

The employment outlook for our graduates is very positive, with 100% employment and opportunities that are as varied as the industry. Some students entering the field today go back to individual family farms, which make up 86% of the 1.9 million farms in the country. Many pursue specific interest in sustainable or organic agriculture. Other opportunities exist with food processing companies, agricultural associations or commodity cooperatives.

Industry supports students who pursue agriculture as a career

Endowments and organizations, such as Essex County Fruit Growers Association, provide scholarships for those interested in agriculture as a career. Stockbridge School is also involved in a new endeavor called the Beginning Farmer Initiative, a collaboration of land grant and private organizations, which will help new and prospective farmers to network with others already in operation in the Northeast.
