An 18-24 month University-to-Schools Masters of Education Teacher candidates in this pathway will complete the core STEP education courses, support their study with advanced work within their content area or content area pedagogy, and complete a pre-practicum and practicum in the final clinical year. Faculty will help you to plan a program of study that best supports your development and academic work toward the masters of Education.
A licensure program as part of the undergraduate degree in your content area for UMass undergraduates. Teacher candidate who are undergraduates will take the core STEP education courses during their sophomore and junior year, completing the clinical year in their senior year. Undergraduates should consult faculty advisors early in their program to be certain they are meeting content knowledge requirements in their major. During the senior year, students will complete a pre-practicum and practicum. Students should plan to have all coursework completed by the spring of their senior year, when the practicum placement will occupy al of their time.
A Post-BA program (of approximately 20 credits) in which the basic program is enhanced to develop your skills and knowledge. Teacher candidates seeking a Post-BA enter the program with the undergraduate degree and are working to secure the teaching license without an advanced degree. They complete the same core STEP courses including a pre-practicum and practicum. Post-BA students may be required to complete additional coursework in their content area in order to be recommended for student teaching and licensure. As well, Post-BA students who are already teaching in the schools may have some requirements waived, in consultation with faculty advisors.
An urban based intensive one-year Masters of Education (180 Days in Springfield). Teacher candidates in 180 days in Springfield complete their Masters of Education through a one-year intensive in which they are in Springfield , Massachusetts middle or high schools all day everyday for one year, taking courses as a cohort in the afternoon and evening. Students begin the practicum in October and complete clinical teaching in the spring. They work with UMass and Springfield Public School faculty to advance their knowledge and develop their practice.
A rural based intensive one-year Masters of Education (Bridges to the Future). Teacher candidates in Bridges to the Future complete their Masters of Education through a one-year intensive in which they are middle or high schools in rural Massachusetts all day everyday for one year, taking courses as a cohort in the afternoon and evening. Students begin the practicum in October and complete clinical teaching in the spring. They work with UMass and Public School faculty to advance their knowledge and develop their practice.
