SPSS 16 Site License

SPSS 16 can be licensed at reduced cost from OIT through the University of Massachusetts site license. The license includes SPSS Base, Advanced and Regression modules, and is only valid for faculty and staff at the Amherst campus and the Medical School. Site licenses require an initial fee and an annual renewal fee. For current pricing, see OITs Site License information page.

Students can get SPSS with a 6 or 12 month license through SPSS e-academy, or the SPSS Grad Pack 4-year license from the University store. The Grad Pack contains SPSS Base, Advanced and Regression modules.

System Requirements for SPSS 16

  • Windows XP (32-bit) or Vista.
  • Intel of AMD x86 processor, 1GHz or higher.
  • 512MB or more of random access memory. 1GB or more is recommended.
  • 450MB of available hard disk space.
  • A CD-ROM drive
  • A graphics adaptor with 800x600 resolution (SVGA) or higher.
  • Internet Explorer 6.0.

Getting SPSS

Please contact the OIT Administrative Desk at 545-9730 or stop by A119 LGRC (Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

Upgrade from earlier releases

Current SPSS licenses are paid up through June 30, 2008. When you pay your annual renewal fee, an SPSS 16 CD and authorization code will be included at no additional cost. You will NOT receive a new SPSS 15 authorization code unless you request to NOT to receive SPSS 16. Should you choose to upgrade to SPSS 16 at a later time, there will be an upgrade cost, due to the additional handling and management required.

SPSS does not support software more than one version lower than its most recent releases. Therefore, SPSS 14 can no longer be renewed.

Licencing

When you license SPSS from OIT, you will receive an "authorization code" that enables installation on as many machines as you have licensed. During installation you will use your authorization code to contact SPSS to activate your license(s). Each license is "locked" to a machine. You can re-install SPSS on the same machine, but your authorization code will not work on any other machine.

Patches

April 2008: SPSS 16.0.2 patch fixes for over 100 bugs, including onw whereby a file that appears to save is missing from the system! 16.0.1 patch must be installed prior to installing 16.0.2. To download patches, go to http://support.spss.com/tech/default.asp. Log on with username guest, password guest.

Technical Support and Consulting

OIT provides technical support for installation and license renewal only. Contact Eva Goldwater, 413-545-2949. Consulting on software usage and statistical questions is available through the Biostatistics Consulting Center.

Compatibility with earlier releases

SPSS 16 Output documents (*.spv) cannot be read by earlier releases of SPSS, and Output documents saved by earlier releases (*.spo) cannot be read by SPSS 16. You can install SPSS SmartViewer 15 from your CD to read output documents from earlier releases.

SPSS 16 Data (*.sav) files and SPSS Syntax (*.sps) files can be used with earlier releases, provided they don't use features introduced in a later release.

SPSS 16 can read data files (*.sav) and syntax files (*.sps), from earlier releases.

What's New in SPSS 16

For a complete list of new features, see http://www.spss.com/spss/whats_new_base.htm

Data and Output Management:

  • Import/Export SPSS data and Output form/to Excel 2007.
  • Change the string length or the data type of an existing variable, using syntax.
  • Define missing values and labels for data strings of any length.
  • Find and replace information in the Data Editor.
  • Spell check value and variable labels.

Statistical Analysis :

  • Generalized Linear Models (GENLIN) and Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) procedures.

Programmability
SPSS Programmability Integration Plug-Ins provide a link to enable SPSS Syntax jobs to use external programming languages.  SPSS Currently offers the following plug-ins:

  • SPSS-Python Integration Plug-In
  • SPSS-.NET Integration Plug-In
  • SPSS-R Integration Plug-In

Introduced in SPSS 15

Data and Output Management:

  • Export SPSS data to MS Access and other databases.
  • Export SPSS results to pdf documents.
  • Work more easily with very wide data files by customizing variable sets. Reduce the variable view to a subset of selected variables, while keeping the entire file loaded and available for analysis.

Graphics:

  • Expanded Chart Types and Options in Chart Builder. New chart types include Dual-Y axis and overlay charts.

Introduced in SPSS 14

  • Open multiple datasets within a single SPSS session
  • Better describe categorical data with value labels up to 120 characters long.
  • Clone or duplicate datasets
  • Access data in SPSS using the latest versions of popular operating systems and databases. SPSS 14.0 updates the Data Access Pack to Connect ODBC 5.1
  • Charts for multiple response sets
  • Drag and drop Chart Builder interface for commonly used chart types. You can see a limited preview of the chart as it is being built, use multiple templates and select interpolation types for lines and areas. For easy access in the future, save customized charts in your Favorites.

Introduced in SPSS 13

The following is a highlight of features introduced with SPSS 13.

Data and Output management:

  • Support for long data strings (up to 32,767 bytes).
  • Date and Time Wizard helps you calculate with dates and times, bring date/time data from a variety of sources to SPSS, create a date/time variable from a string containing a date variable, and parse individual date/time units.
  • View wide and long datasets using splitter controls in the Data Editor
  • Automatically convert string variables to numeric variables using the improved autorecode command
  • Save aggregated values directly to your active file using the improved aggregate command
  • Conveniently share data between SPSS 13.0 and SAS ® 9.0. SPSS 13.0 can read/write SAS 9 files.
  • Export tables and charts directly from SPSS 13.0 to Microsoft® PowerPoint®

Graphics:

  • Three new chart types in your work - population pyramids, 3-D bar charts, and Dot Density charts.
  • New chart display features/options in your graphs
  • Paneled charts for displaying sub-chart in a table-like arrangement, showing differences among groups and conditioning variables. Paneled charts are available for most SPSS graphs.
  • Include error bars on categorical charts. Add error bars to nearly any categorical chart, including bar charts, area plots, and line plots
  • Add diagonal reference lines to compare your data to a diagonal line. Also, drag horizontal and vertical reference lines to any position on the axis

Statistics: New options available for multinomial logistic regression (MLR) in the SPSS Regression Models add-on module enable you to:

  • Score and Wald methods for stepwise selection in MLR
  • Assess your model fit using Aikaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC; also called Schwarz Bayesian Criterion, or SBC)
