Compatibility with earlier SAS Releases
Data files and formats catalogs created with SAS version 8.0 or higher under Windows can be used directly with 32-bit SAS version 9.x under Windows.

Compatibility between 32-bit and 64-bit SAS Releases
Data files without formats catalogs created with 32-bit SAS version 8.0 or higher under Windows can be used directly with 64-bit SAS version 9.x under Windows. You will get a warning indicating that the data was created under a different operating system. Formats catalogs are NOT directly transferrable between 32 and 64 bit SAS, regardless of SAS release. Formats catalogs created with 32-bit SAS must be converted to SAS datasets, or exported, on 32-bit SAS in order to be used with 64-bit SAS. See Transporting SAS Libraries.

If you use 64-bit SAS with 32-bit Office and need to import Excel or Access files to SAS, you will need to install 32-bit SAS PC Files Server, which is included on your installation DVD. For more information, see SAS/Access 9.3 Interface to PC Files Reference and SAS Usage Note 33228.
