XWindows Software for use with UNIX stats server

XWindows is a point-and-click graphical user interface to the unix operating system. The SAS System and SPSS require such an interface for interactive use. They can be used non-interactively without XWindows. Some other unix applications, such as emacs, can take advantage of such an interface, but do not require it.

XLiveCD is a free XWindows emulation program for PCs, developed at Indiana University .

Mac OS X version 10.3 and higher can use the X11 utility available from Apple to get similar functionality. If you don't already have it, you can get it from:

NOTE: Using XWindows is only practical for on-campus users. It is too slow to be rewarding from off-campus, even if you have DSL or cable connection.
