II. SAS Windowing Environment

The 5 main SAS Windows and what they do

SAS provides windows for accomplishing all the basic SAS tasks you need to do. When you first start SAS software, the 5 main SAS windows open are: the Explorer, Results, Editor, Log, and Output. However, your screen will only be showing the Explorer, Editor, and Log windows as follows:

In the Explorer window, you can view and manage your SAS files and create shortcuts to non-SAS files. Use this window to create new libraries and SAS files, open any SAS files and perform most file management tasks such as moving, copying and deleting files.

The Log window displays messages about your SAS session and any SAS program you submit.

In the Editor window, you enter, edit, and submit SAS programs. To open your SAS programs, click in the Editor window then from the File menu choose Open to select your SAS program.

In the Output window, you can browse output from SAS programs you submit. By default, the Output window is positioned behind the Editor and Log window. When you create output, the Output window automatically moves to the front of your display.

The Results window helps you navigate and manage output from the SAS program you submit. You can view, save, and print individual items of output. By default the Results window is positioned behind the Explorer window and is empty until you submit a SAS program that creates output. Then it moves to the front of your display.

SAS windows features

Manage your SAS windows

In the Windows environment, you can send a window that you aren't using to the SAS task bar or display a window that is currently not visible. Click on the Minimize button (first of the 3 buttons in top right corner of window) in the Editor window or click on the Editor button in the SAS windows bar (bottom row of buttons), as shown below:

This puts the Editor window in the SAS task bar. Your screen will look like:

Click on the Editor button again to restore the Editor window.

Likewise to display the Results Window which is currently not visible, click on the Results button on the SAS task bar and you will see the Explorer window replaced by the Results window as below:

Menus

Each window in the workspace has its own menu selections that reflect the actions you can perform using the window. Click the Explorer window and select the View menu. You get the following options to change how your icons or files are displayed in the Explorer window.

Now click the Editor window and again select the View menu. Notice that it offers different selections:

Command bar

The command bar, directly below the menu, is where you can type in SAS commands. Most of the commands that you can type in the command bar are also accessible through the pull-down menus or the tool bar.

Toolbar

The toolbar displays icons for many of the SAS tasks you perform most often. Some tools are specific to the active window. Click the Explorer window and view the icons that are available on the toolbar. Notice that currently unavailable icons are grayed. To see what a tool is, move your mouse pointer to the tool and hold it there for a moment. A Screen Tip displays the name of the tool.

Now click the Editor window and view the icons available.

Note: If you have divided your screen between the browser window and SAS window, then you will not see all the tools available for each window. To see more of the tool bar on your divided screen, place your cursor in the tool bar window on the vertical line to the right of the command bar. When you see the double arrow, drag your cursor to the left. The command bar will get smaller and more tools will appear on the tool bar menu.
