Statistical
Data and Software Help
University
of Massachusetts, Amherst MA 01003
This website provides basic
information on available statistical software: UMass site licenses, public computers with statistical software, getting started instructional materials, workshops,
and links to other resources. It also
has a collection of datasets for
educational purposes.
OIT provides technical support only for installation and license renewal of site licensed statistical software. Contact Eva Goldwater, 413-545-2949. Consulting on software usage and statistical questions is available through the Biostatistics Consulting Center (BCCUMA) in the School of Public Health.
Software with Campus-wide Access & Site Licenses
The Office of Information
Technologies provides access to statistical software through various
mechanisms:
Unix Stats Server: SAS,
SPSS, R
A UNIX server is available for use by faculty, staff and students requiring non-PC based statistical software or programming languages. Release numbers of statistical software available on UNIX server are listed under What's New (though some software on UNIX server is not very new...) Useful links for getting started using statistical software on UNIX server are under Statistical Software.
Unix stats server configuration, services, and getting an account.
OIT Windows Computer Labs: Minitab,
SAS, SPSS, Stata, Systat, R
All faculty, staff and students with a UMAccess username can use the software
in OIT's PC labs. For lab locations, hours, and installed software releases, see OIT's PCCO
Classroom Operations site.
SBS Open Source Linux Lab: The School of Social & Behavioral Sciences operates a computer lab with Linux-based equipment. Installed software includes Stata and R. For information, see http://www.umass.edu/opensource/
Site licenses: Minitab,
SAS, SPSS, Systat
OIT distributes site licensed software to eligible users at reduced cost. Site licensed software requires annual renewal, and entails an annual fee. Site license eligibility
varies by software. The following software is available through site licenses:
Windows: Minitab, SAS, SPSS, Sytat
Linux: SAS (selected Linux implementations only)
Macintosh: SAS (no longer supported, not recommended)
For pricing and eligibility, see OITs Site License information page. If you wish to get software under the University of Massachusetts site license program, please contact the OIT Administrative Desk at 545-9730 or stop by A119 LGRC (Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

Direct Purchase Discounts
If you are not eligible for
site licensed software, or are looking for other software, here are some reasonable alternatives:
Minitab is
available at the University Store at very
favorable academic discount. The University Store sells perpetual
license software with the Minitab User's Guide. (Warning: The University Store's online store advertised price for Minitab is incorrect. Contact the store in person to get the proper discount.)
The Minitab
e-academy offers semester and one-year "rentals" to students,
and perpetual license to students, faculty and staff. The User's
Guide is additional. All of these are the full software, not a student
edition. Also available by telephone, toll-free: 1-877-616-0662
SPSS offers students 6 and 12 month "rentals" through SPSS e-academy. You can get SPSS Base alone, or SPSS Grad Pack, which includes the Advanced and Regression modules. For longer-term use, SPSS Grad Pack with 4-year license is
available to students through the University Store. The Grad Pack is the same
software as OIT's site license, but is limited to student purchase,
and does not require annual renewal. SPSS Grad Pack for Macintosh can be ordered through the University Store, or at JourneyEd. All of these are full software, not the
Student Edition, which is much more limited.
Stata can be purchased
directly from the manufacturer at very favorable rates through a
special arrangement with the University. For current pricing, see http://www.stata.com/order/new/edu/gradplan.html
To purchase, call Stata at 1-800-782-8272
or e-mail service@stata.com. Identify yourself as a UMass student, faculty or staff and make
payment directly to Stata. They will fax the University Store to
release the software to you.
e-academy and the University Store have a variety of other software discounts for academic users. Eligibilty and terms vary. (Warning: The University Store's online software store is operated by an outside company, and does not always offer the best available discount. Check pricing with the store directly before making online purchases.)
