GrowAverage is a Macintosh application for demonstrating the Law of Large Numbers and the Central Limit Theorem. Samples from a population are drawn in "real time" to construct distributions of sample means (or medians). These are saved so that sampling distributions based on different-sized samples can be visually compared.
GrowAverage is especially useful for mathematics teachers striving to teach students probability and statistics in line with recommendations offered by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in their Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
Also included with the software is a folder of data files and a User’s Guide. The Guide includes a scripted tutorial for use in a classroom demonstration. This is a pdf file, so you will need Acrobat Reader to read it.
System Requirements:
GrowAverage was written in for Mac Classic computers in 1991, and runs on all Mac computers up through the "PowerPC" era of about 2007. More specifically you need: :
· Any Macintosh computer with 1MB of RAM or more
· MacOS 6.0.5 - 9.2.2 or MacOS X with the Classic environment installed
· 68000 or PowerPC processor, but NOT Intel processors
We have tested it on recent versions of Macintosh’s operating system (including OS X 10.4) and it appears to work well. But we cannot guaranty that it will continue to do so, and we are not planning any future updates.
