Panel Series "Strategies for Change: Lessons from Springfield Leaders" to Start in February

Community leaders from the city of Springfield are coming to the UMass campus this semester for a series of four panels entitled "Strategies for Change: Lessons from Springfield Leaders." All panels will take place from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays in the Campus Center rooms 805-09.  

February 4, 2016 - Food deserts will be the focus of this panel about the campaign to develop a supermarket in the Mason Square neighborhood of Springfield. This panel will feature Synthia Mitchell of Concerned Citizens of Mason Square and Jay Minkarah, the Executive Director of Develop Springfield.

February 25, 2016 - Three leading community journalists in the panel "Voices from Springfield: Journalism in Springfield’s Diverse Communities." This panel will feature Frederick Hurst, publisher of African American Point of View Elizabeth Roman, reporter for El Pueblo Latino; and ​Michael Dobbs, editor of Reminder Publications.

March 10, 2016 - Prevention strategies for asthma and youth incarceration will be the focus the panel "Less Jails, Less Asthma: Paying for Prevention in Springfield." This panel will feature Keith Rhone Assistant, Director of ROCA Springfield; Frank Robinson, Vice President of Community Health, Baystate Health; and Sarita Hudson of Partners for a Healthier Community.

April 7, 2016 - The final panel of the series will focus on the cooperative development and job creation work of the Wellspring Cooperatives and will feature various speakers from the project.
