Misra Interviewed about Work-Family Policy in the US

Joya Misra

Joya Misra, professor at the UMass Amherst School of Public Policy and Department of Sociology, was interviewed on BYU Radio's Matt Townsend Show for a segment titled "The US Is Stingier with Child Care and Maternity Leave than the Rest of the World."

Misra, whose research looks at work-family policy from a cross-national perspective, noted that the US is one of only four countries in the world that does not offer paid leave to new parents. But family-friendly workplace policies such as parental leave and affordable childcare, she argued, offer many benefits — not just to parents and kids, but also to the economy, by allowing parents to remain involved in the labor force and workplaces to retain good employees. She also discussed the importance of calling on lawmakers to put into place these kinds of policies.

About the School of Public Policy: Established in 2016, the UMass Amherst School of Public Policy is a hub for research and teaching, preparing students for leadership in public service. The program’s focuses include social change and public policy related to science and technology.
