Colon Wins College's Outstanding Staff Award

Kathy Colon

Kathy Colon, longtime office manager for the School of Public Policy, has been named a recipient of a 2018 College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Outstanding Staff Award.

The award recognizes SBS staff members for fostering a collaborative and positive work environment, implementing innovative work processes, and exemplifying integrity and dedication. Crystal Paul, director of administration and research for the Political Science Department, is the other 2018 Outstanding Staff Award winner.

"Kathy and Crystal exemplify the central roles staff play in the success of their department or school,” said SBS Dean John Hird. “Both of them do so many things so well that SPP and Political Science depend every day on their experience, initiative, and creativity.  I'm delighted the College is able to recognize our outstanding staff with this important award."

Colon has worked at UMass for twenty-five years and has been with the public policy program since its inception in 1998. Over that time, she has helped the program evolve from a center to a school and add new programs, managed numerous personnel searches, and overseen the program’s move from Gordon Hall to Thompson Hall. She also processes admissions, coordinates course schedules, manages SPP events, serves as personnel coordinator, and provides a broad range of other administrative support. Equally important, Colon builds strong bonds with SPP students, faculty, and staff; alumni of the program keep in close touch with her, regularly sending their greetings and updates on their lives post-SPP.

"Kathy has been the heart of the public policy program for twenty years,” said SPP Director Alasdair Roberts. “She keeps our operations running smoothly and is a supportive presence for our students, alumni, and faculty. Over the past year, the School has undergone big changes, and we couldn’t have done it without Kathy’s professionalism and enthusiasm."

“It is a pleasure to work in such a great community of people helping our students achieve their success!” Colon said about the recognition.

Colon and Paul will receive their Outstanding Staff Awards at the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences’ annual staff luncheon on May 18.
