Center for Community Health Equity Research - Proposed

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences has put forth a proposal for a new Center for Community Health Equity Research to the University of Massachusetts Amherst faculty senate. The center's purpose is to advance knowledge on the relationship between equity and population health, toward the goal of improving the health and well-being of the population as a whole, with special emphasis on addressing the needs of population groups experiencing higher rates of health problems. The center aims to examine the interaction between science and politics, addressing a critical research gap and assuming a national leadership position in recognizing that promoting quality of life and the well-being of the population as a whole is both a scientific challenge and a moral and political struggle to achieve consensus on viable solutions.
