For nine weeks in the summer of 2008, I worked in the Washington D.C. offices of Massachusetts Senator and former Democratic presidential candidate, John Kerry. Based on my interest in public health, I was assigned to help out the health care legislative aide and correspondent. In addition to the typical duties of a Senate intern like sorting mail and giving tours of the US Capitol, I was assigned to work mainly on determining the cost-effectiveness and medical outcomes of making preventative health care a top priority in the way Americans approached health care. In addition to working in Senator Kerry’s offices, I was the coordinator of the Stanley Miller Fellowship. This Fellowship enabled me to meet with a wide range of top public servants from Representative Michael Capuano of Massachusetts to former Director of the FBI and CIA Judge William Webster. This opportunity to see how Senator Kerry and the entire US Congress approach the issue of public health further cemented my interest in having a career in public health.
