    • 13th Annual International Conference on Dose Response
    • Tuesday, April 22, 2014 8:00 am
    • UMass Amherst, Amherst, MA
    • The 2014 Dose-Response, Preconditioning: Adaptive Responses in Biology and Medicine will explore the rapidly emerging area of Preconditioning, its biomedical implications, its dose response features and its underlying mechanisms.  Speakers at the conference will address recent discoveries concerning how preconditioning may be used to protect against environmental stressor agents, slow down and prevent a wide range of neurological and cardiovascular diseases, and how such knowledge can be translated into medical practice, taking into consideration the challenges of human inter-individual variation.  The convergence of scientists from multiple disciplines on this topic is designed to provide a greater interactive focus on the topic of low dose responses and hopefully prevent further professional/academic isolation with respect to language, concept and interpretation of low dose effects.  The conference will also provide the most current advances in the nature of the dose response with respect to chemical and radiation induced stresses as well as a host of effects of pharmaceutical agents that have profound biomedical and risk assessment implications.

The conference is approved for CPH Recertification by the National Board of Public Health Examiners.  For more information, visit www.dose-response.org, email the conference coordinator, Denise Leonard, at dleonard@schoolph.umass.edu or call the International Dose-Response Society at 413-545-3164.

    • Tuesday, April 22, 2014 7:00 pm
    • UMass Amherst, Mahar Auditorium
    • Join the UMass Amherst Community as we celebrate the 44th Earth Day.  This year's Earth Day theme at UMass Amherst is "Climate Change: Building a Diverse Movement for Environmental Justice and Sustainability.”  The campus community will be engaging in meaningful campus reflection and action toward building more diversity and inclusivity into the sustainability community here and more broadly.

The event is free and open to the public, with a book signing by Dr. Bullard to follow his address.

Robert D. Bullard is the Dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. He is often described as the father of environmental justice. Professor Bullard received his Ph.D. degree from Iowa State University. He is the author of seventeen books that address sustainable development, environmental racism, urban land use, industrial facility siting, community reinvestment, housing, transportation, climate justice, emergency response, smart growth, and regional equity. Professor Bullard was featured in the July 2007 CNN People You Should Know, Bullard: Green Issue is Black and White. In 2008, Newsweek named him one of 13 Environmental Leaders of the Century. And that same year, Co-op America honored him with its Building Economic Alternatives Award (BEA).

    • Western Massachusetts Health Equity Summit

    • UMass Amherst, Campus Center, Amherst, MA
    • A coalition of public health leaders is organizing the first-ever Western MA Health Equity Summit  for October 2, 2014 to bring western MA practitioners and community leaders together to take steps to achieve more health equity in western MA by working, learning and taking action together. It will be geared toward a wide range of practitioners, professionals, young adults and community leaders.

Organizers are inspired by a vision of health equity in which residents of the four western counties are able to achieve full health because unjust and avoidable obstacles have been replaced with equitable health policies and practices.  Our vision is to chart a path towards more equity in all aspects of health for our residents.  The summit will allow attendees to take back information and work in their own communities, as well as join in a network to address regional issues to make positive and lasting change.
