Departments

The School's academic departments provide the best in education, research, outreach and practice to optimize the public’s health and quality of life. Students and faculty engage in classroom work, lead community-based projects, and conduct research across the traditional core areas of public health and related health sciences.

Faculty in our academic departments focus on many cross-cutting issues such as obesity and diabetes prevention, women’s health, global health, aging and healthy living, and speech-language and audiology disorders. In addition to traditional classroom-based learning, the departments offer numerous opportunities for collaborative research projects with award-winning faculty, community-based student internships, and experience in clinical and outreach programs and partnerships that promote health and the quality of life in diverse populations.

The School has four academic departments:

Communication Disorders:
The Department of Communication Disorders offers high-quality educational programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, integrated with a nationally recognized clinical training program for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, as well as continuing education, outreach opportunities and in-service training. The department seeks to advance the knowledge bases that underlie our academic, clinical, and service programs by maintaining an ongoing effort in research in the normative processes of speech, language, and hearing and clinical studies in the pathologies of speech, language and hearing.

Kinesiology:
The Department of Kinesiology offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Kinesiology. The degree programs in Kinesiology prepare a candidate to study and apply kinesiology from a multidisciplinary approach. Applications are in the biomedical, health, and fitness-related fields in public and private industries.

Nutrition:
The Department of Nutrition is among the most comprehensive nutrition departments in New England, offering training at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level, along with dietetic internship experiences and off-campus outreach and education. Our program features small classes, award-winning instructors, and personalized advising.

Public Health:
The Department of Public Health educates students on campus and health care professionals online to promote health and prevent disease. It prepares students to work with diverse populations and to serve in a variety of settings in government, nonprofit organizations, businesses and communities. The Department offers B.S., M.S., M.P.H., and Ph.D. degrees in public health. It provides graduate students with a background in public health and with specific competencies in Biostatistics, Community Health Education, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Policy and Management.
