Non-R.D. Options: Further Education

Graduate School

A degree in nutrition gives opportunities to continue education in many different academic fields. While some choose to pursue higher degrees in nutrition, others use their nutrition education to explore other academic areas. Graduate school is a common path for students. Students have pursued the following degrees while maintaining a focus in nutrition:

  • Masters in Nutrition
  • PhD in Nutrition

Others have chosen to explore other fields:

  • MPH (Master of Public Health)
  • Biochemistry (MS or PhD)
  • Social Work (MSW)
  • Microbiology (MS or PhD)
  • Food Science (MS or PhD)
  • Education (MEd)
  • Other Biological Sciences (MS or PhD)
  • Public Policy or Administration (MPA)
  • Business (MBA)

Nutrition as a Pre-Major

Nutrition provides an excellent foundation for continuing careers in the health field. The human nutrition major includes a multitude of courses from various scientific fields including: biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, kinesiology, and food science. In addition, the focus on community equips students with the social skills necessary to interact with the general public. Students majoring in nutrition have pursued the following careers.

  • Physician’s Assistant
  • Pharmacy
  • Chiropractic
  • Phlebotomy
  • Anesthesiology
  • Obstetrics
  • Nursing
  • Medicine
  • Midwifery

Many of the prerequisites for the following graduate programs are conveniently required in the nutrition curriculum.

Pre-Med

Additional coursework* required:

  • 2 semesters of physics
  • additional biology courses
  • suggested calculus

Pre-Nursing

Additional coursework* required:

  • elementary statistics
  • anatomy and physiology I and II

Pre-Dental

Additional coursework varies dependent on institution.

*Additional coursework is specific to each individual program. One must reference each graduate school’s prerequisites for admission.
