Undergraduate Programs – Scholarships
Two scholarships for seniors (at least 90 credit hours accrued) are offered by the department: the Virginia Beal Scholarship and the Helen Mitchell Scholarship. These scholarships are named for former faculty members at UMass, both well-respected in the profession. Scholarship recipients are selected by the nutrition faculty. While emphasis is placed on academic performance, a student's potential contribution to the profession as well as financial needs are taken into account in making the final decision. The deadline for application is usually late in the Fall semester.
A third scholarship program is the Health and Nutrition Diversity Scholars (HANDS) program. This program no longer offers scholarship funding. However, recruitment of HANDS scholars is ongoing to continue the goal of academic and community support to expand the diversity of students who pursue nutrition. HANDS scholars participate in a Scholars Seminar, with recruitment and outreach, community education, professional development, and research activities each semester. New students should consult grant and scholarship information provided by Financial Aid Services.
