Undergraduate Programs – Suggested Electives

In choosing electives, it is important to remember that hundreds of students are graduating from dietetic programs across the country with similar minimal competencies discussed above. This makes the selection of electives very important because it permits a student to distinguish him/herself by adding additional background and skills which may be attractive to future employers. For example, knowledge of a foreign language, particularly Spanish, is a great asset at employment time. Numerous job descriptions each year in hospital- or community-based programs stipulate a proficiency in Spanish, and the relatively few students with this skill have no difficulty finding employment. Other areas of emphasis which are appropriate as areas of specialization include: Exercise Science; Hospitality and Tourism Management (HT-MGT); Public Health; Education; or Business. Be sure to check the prerequisites when selecting electives. Some courses may be limited to students in specified majors; if so, it may be possible to obtain special permission from the sponsoring department.
