Welcome to our new online degree program!
Purpose
To provide nutrition and health practitioners and those with advanced degrees the opportunity to continue their careers, while earning a Master's Degree of Public Health in Nutrition that emphasizes a broad background in public health and advanced training in public health nutrition.
Mission and Philosophy
The Online Master of Public Health in Nutrition (Online MPH Nutrition) was developed to train nutrition and health practitioners worldwide in the area of public health nutrition. This part-time graduate degree program supports the mission of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS), which is to optimize the public’s health and quality of life through education, research, outreach, and practice. Through integrating the disciplines of public health and nutrition, the Online MPH Nutrition uses web-based communication and active learning to train health practitioners to solve complex health and nutrition issues.
Students enrolled in the Online MPH Nutrition work in interdisciplinary teams, provide evidenced-based approaches in coursework, and incorporate critical thinking and experiential learning to solve current community-based health problems ranging from obesity and chronic disease to malnutrition, food insecurity, and nutritional deficiencies. Advanced training in public health nutrition and health program management will help nutrition professionals and other health practitioners gain skills to provide services for the growing populations of older adults and diverse groups and to increase the focus of services on prevention and wellness.
Requirements for the Online MPH Nutrition include a core of graduate-level public health courses (15 credits), courses emphasizing nutrition (15 credits of course work, 2 credits of graduate seminar, 3 credits of nutrition electives, 3 credits of practicum), and 6 credits of culminating experience for a total of 44 credits. The online and flexible nature of the courses will allow participants to continue to be employed full or part-time. Most students who complete two courses each semester, including summer, should expect to complete the coursework in three years.
