Department of Nutrition

Graduate Programs – Financial Aid

Teaching and research assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Stipends depend on source of funding and length of time in the program. In addition to 97% of the health fees, holders of assistantships and certain fellowships or scholarships qualify for waivers of tuition and fees. A limited number of Graduate School fellowships are available on a competitive basis.

The Department also offers graduate students three Nutrition Scholarships: the Virginia Beal Scholarship, the Helen Mitchell Scholarship and the Peter L. Pellett Scholarship. These scholarships are named for former faculty members at UMass, well-respected in the profession. Scholarship recipients are selected by the nutrition faculty. While emphasis is placed on academic performance, a student's potential contribution to the profession as well as financial needs are taken into account in making the final decision. The deadline for application is usually late in the Fall semester.

In addition, the Department offers the Virginia A. Beal Fellowship for one doctoral student annually.
