Giving to the Virginia A. Beal Lectureship Fund
In 1989, Professor Emerita Virginia A. Beal, a pioneer in the field of nutrition and a longtime member of the Nutrition faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, established an endowment to provide students, faculty, dietetics professionals, and alumni and friends, with an opportunity to discuss the challenges and advances that are currently at the forefront in the Nutrition field.
The Virginia A. Beal Lecture is the only endowed lecture in the Department, and has become an anticipated annual tradition. The evening is a celebration of nutrition research, and an opportunity to acknowledge our finest students through the presentation of endowed scholarship awards, one of which bears Virginia Beal’s name. Professor Beal presented the first lecture in 1989, and in the intervening years, nationally-renowned researchers in nutrition have spoken at this annual event.
Through the generosity of former students, friends, and the late Professor Beal, the Department continues to offer the annual Virginia A. Beal Lecture. The event occurs each spring, and attracts many alumni and friends to an evening of conversation and learning.
In order to continue to provide this evening of research, scholarship, and outreach programming to our students, faculty, and alumni, the Nutrition Department seeks to grow the endowment for the Beal Lecture. We rely on this endowment to advocate for educational opportunities, to demonstrate the importance of research and outreach initiatives, and to honor the Professor who gave so much to us as students and colleagues. Alumni support of the Beal Lecture Series will:
- Allow the Nutrition Department to bring nationally recognized speakers to the campus.
- Help preserve the excellent quality and expand the scope of this lecture series.
- Assist the department in lowering or eliminating the cost of attendance for students.
We hope that you will join us in honoring Professor Beal by making a gift to this endowed lecture series.
