Hiromi Gunshin, Assistant Professor of Nutrition, was recently awarded three grants to study iron transport in various cells in mammals. She has received $260,000 for 4 years from the American Heart Association to study molecular mechanisms of cardiac iron accumulation. Dr. Gunshin has also received an award of $80,000 for 2 years from the Cooley's Anemia Foundation to investigate molecular analysis of iron overload in thalassemia. The third grant is an award of $60,000 for 2 years from the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation for studies toward alternative therapies for iron overload patients with aplastic anemia.
