Chasan-Taber Presents Distinguished Faculty Lecture

Professor of Epidemiology Lisa Chasan-Taber led off the 2013-14 Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Monday, Dec. 9 with a talk titled “It’s Never too Early: Diabetes Prevention in Pregnancy.” Following her talk, Chasan-Taber was presented with the Chancellor’s Medal, the highest recognition given for service to the campus.

SPHHS student Nicholas Otis receives Salute to Service Scholarship

SPHHS undergraduate Nicholas Otis, a dual degree honors student in Nutrition and Kinesiology, and a member of the university track team, was one of three UMass students who received the Salute to Service Student Scholarship at a special event held on November 20, 2013 in Boston. Otis was nominated for his leadership in the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutrition, Athletics, and for his work in public service and civic engagement, both in the U.S. and in Tanzania.

Communication Disorders' Helfer Reports Multiple Factors combine to cause hearing loss in middle age

Results from a recent study of hearing in middle-aged and older adults conducted by Associate Professor of Communication Disorders Karen Helfer suggest that hearing loss is not the only factor playing a role as people experience age-related speech comprehension problems. Instead, declines in cognitive skills, particularly memory and processing speed, also contribute.

Kinesiology students awarded Undergraduate Research Grants

Kinesiology majors Alexander Borges and Kara McCormick have been selected to receive CYBEX undergraduate research grants to help fund the completion of their honors thesis projects. The grants are the first awarded under a new agreement between the Department of Kinesiology and CYBEX International.

ClimbAmerica! is a special fundraising event produced by Brigham and Women's program, ClimbCorps, in which participants climb Boston’s tallest buildings to help fight heart disease.You can challenge yourself and race against other climbers, or use it as a chance to exercise and spend time with friends and family. It’s also a great opportunity to raise awareness for this important cause and climb in honor of loved ones who have been affected by heart disease.
