Social justice symposium to highlight health care as a human right

The College of Nursing will host an upcoming one-day symposium on social justice at UMass Amherst titled “Health Is a Human Right: A Call to Action.” Co-sponsored by the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) and the College of Education, the event will provide participants with an opportunity to engage with local and global practitioners of social justice health and health care.

Highlights will include a keynote by internationally-renowned social justice scholar Peggy Chinn; speakers like National League of Nursing CEO Beverly Malone; and breakout sessions on issues such as aging, diversity, violence, and sexual and reproductive health rights. The breakout sessions will be led by a broad range of by social justice experts both on-campus and off-campus, including the SPHHS’ own Aline Gubrium, Associate Professor of Community Health Education.

The symposium will take place March 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Amherst Room at the Campus Center. General registration costs $50, and students can register for $15. Read more here.
