Participants needed for child language research studies

February 26, 2018

Researchers in the Department of Communication Disorders seek English-speaking children to participate in research studies on language development through the Sounds2Syntax Laboratory, directed by Assistant Professor Jill Hoover.

The lab seeks:

  1. Children with typical speech, language and hearing skills who are between the ages of 3 to 6 years old and speak only English.
  2. Children with language impairment who are between the ages of 4 to 6. Children with language impairment must have normal hearing, communicate verbally and not have a co-occurring diagnosis of intellectual disability.

All children will be asked to complete a battery of 1) standardized measures assessing speech, language and cognition and 2) experimental computer tasks designed to assess vocabulary and grammar. Studies require children to attend 4 sessions (approximately 75 minutes in length) in the Sounds2Syntax Laboratory located in Arnold House on the UMass Amherst campus. Children will receive small toys or books at the end of each session as compensation for their participation.

Parents or guardians of minors who wish to participate can call 413-545-3177 or email the Sounds2Syntax Laboratory at s2slab@comdis.umass.edu or Jill Hoover at jrhoover@comdis.umass.edu.
