Edward M. Barksdale, Jr., MD will present a lecture titled “Youth Violence: The Ultimate Health Disparity: Reflections of a Pediatric Surgeon."
Barksdale is the Robert J. Izant, Jr. Professor & Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine & Surgeon-in-Chief at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital/University Hospitals in Cleveland Ohio. He received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree with honors at Yale University, where he was also an NCAA All-American fencer. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and trained in General Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and was selected to serve as the prestigious Chief of the West Surgery Service (first African American). He completed clinical fellowship training in Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Dr. Barksdale began his academic career at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh where he advanced to Full Professor with tenure during his 13 year career prior to coming to Case Western. A frequent lecturer in pediatric intestinal failure, Dr. Barksdale was the Co-founder of the first center to provide coordinated care (including intestinal transplantation) for children with intestinal failure. He has also received numerous awards and recognitions as a medical educator. Dr. Barksdale has been a passionate advocate for child health and health care through bridging his academic endeavors with diverse community activities ranging from child welfare, violence prevention to health disparities. His professional and personal career have been strongly driven by core values instilled during his youth growing up in Central Virginia during the 1960’s. His career embodies his ongoing pursuit of individual responsibility, personal excellence and social justice.
