Assistant Professor of Community Health Education Elizabeth Evans recently held a guest spot on BYU Radio’s Top of Mind with host Julie Rose. On the program, Evans discusses her work studying the rate of substance abuse disorders among military veterans compared to the rate of substance abuse among civilians. She explains adults with adverse childhood experiences are more likely to turn to drug and alcohol abuse and even more so as veterans.
“In the general population, typically women have a lower risk of alcohol and drug use disorders than men, but among veterans we see a different pattern in that, women and men have similar risks for those types of disorders. It’s striking that there is a gender difference in the general population…but we don’t see that same gender difference among veterans,” Evans notes.
