The Department of Nutrition will host the 27th Annual Virginia A. Beal Lecture on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room on the third floor of the Mullins Center.
Robert S. Chapkin, PhD, Distinguished Professor, University Faculty Fellow, Regents Fellow & AgriLife Senior Faculty Fellow at Texas A&M University will deliver the keynote lecture titled “Winning the Chemoprevention War: Reducing Inflammation through Nutrition” at 5:30 p.m.
The program will also feature a 4 p.m. poster session where Nutrition graduate students will share their research, and a 5 p.m. awards ceremony where the Department will present the Virginia A. Beal, Peter Pellett, and Helen Mitchell Awards.
The lecture bears the name of the late Professor Emerita Virginia A. Beal, a pioneer in the field of nutrition and a longtime member of the Nutrition faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Professor Beal established the endowment to provide students, faculty, dietetics professionals, and alumni and friends, with an opportunity to discuss the challenges and advances that are currently at the forefront in the Nutrition field.
An anticipated annual tradition, the Virginia A. Beal Lecture is a celebration of nutrition research and an opportunity to acknowledge the department’s finest students through the presentation of endowed scholarship awards, one of which bears Virginia A. Beal’s name. Professor Beal presented the first lecture in 1989, and in the intervening years, nationally-renowned researchers in nutrition have spoken at this annual event.
