Department of Kinesiology co-sponsors Active Aging in the Valley

The Department of Kinesiology, in conjunction with the Daily Hampshire Gazette, will host Active Aging in the Valley on Saturday, November 18th, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the UMass Amherst Campus Center. The annual event will offer free lectures, workshops, and panel discussions on a variety of exercise-and health-related topics for older adults.

Assistant Professor of Kinesiology Katherine Boyer will provide the opening keynote talk on “Staying Active with Osteoarthritis” at 12:00 pm following an introduction from Western Mass News anchor Dave Madsen and Kinesiology lecturer Judi LaBranche.

Kinesiology faculty Katie Becofsky and Tom St. Laurent will provide workshops on “Activity and Cognitive Function” and “Resistance, Balance and Back Care,” respectively, with Assistant Professor Mark Miller providing a closing keynote talk on "Aging and Exercise: Difference Between Men and Women."

Attendees will learn about the science of aging and tips about physical activity for the older adult, and will have the opportunity to receive free health screenings from Kinesiology students and free hearing screenings from Communication Disorders students. Booths featuring services and programs pertaining to health and physical activity for older adults will also be showcased.
