Cordeiro Receives College Outstanding Teacher Award
Dr. Lorraine Cordeiro, Assistant Professor of Nutrition, has received the College Outstanding Teacher Award for the School of Public Health and Health Sciences. The award is sponsored by the UMass Amherst Provost’s Office and the Center for Teaching & Faculty Development, and given annually to honor individual faculty members for their teaching accomplishments. The recipients will be recognized at Undergraduate Commencement and at the School’s Senior Recognition Ceremony.
Dr. Cordeiro was cited for her impact on students and contributions to the teaching mission at the university. “I view education as a partnership between faculty, students, and community members which builds on respect for what each of us brings into the classroom,” said Dr. Cordeiro. “I want students to leave my courses academically challenged, with a practical set of skills in nutrition that allows for the immediate application of nutrition sciences to community settings.”
This past year, Dr. Cordeiro taught Community Nutrition, Senior Seminar, Nutritional Problems in Developing Countries, and Food and Nutrition Policy. Dr. Cordeiro’s area of expertise is on household food security and adolescent nutritional health. She is currently investigating the associations between food security, food practices, and health risks among Cambodian women in Massachusetts.
