“Be free and own the decisions that you make, even if so-called ‘failure’ is the outcome.”

That was the realization Public Health Sciences alumna Eliza Shirazi ’13 had as she accepted that she had to give up her goal of making it to the top of Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. The Kick it By Eliza cardio workout creator had gathered a team of her closest friends to climb Kilimanjaro in a fundraising effort for Flying Kites, a non-profit designed to empower poor children in Kenya (read our previous coverage here).

In a blog post appearing online in Boston Magazine, Shirazi recounts her travels to Mt. Kilimanjaro, her altitude sickness and fatigue in making the ascent, and her heart-wrenching decision to leave her team and descend the mountain. She also comes to the realization that there is a lesson to be learned and a “freedom in failure.”
