In the Muscle Physiology Lab, we strive to understand the effects of age, gender, and physical activity on human skeletal muscle function. We use a combination of techniques to study various aspects of muscle physiology and energetics. We are currently seeking volunteers for several research projects. You may be eligible if you:
* are 21-35 or 65-80 years old
* do not smoke
* do not participate in a structured exercise program
Information about the way your muscle functions, as well as some monetary compensation are provided to volunteers who complete the study!
If you are interested or would like more information, please visit our website at www.people.umass.edu/muscle or contact us at 413-545-5305.
Researchers in the Physical Activity and Health Lab at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst are doing a study that seeks to understand how we spend our time each day. We will test out a survey to measure where, why, and how we spend our time each day. This survey will help researchers find ways to decrease sitting time, and help them to get a better idea of how sitting may affect health.
You may qualify for the study if you are:
- Age 18 - 75 yrs old
- Able to walk without major joint or muscle problems and without the use of walking aids such as crutches or a wheelchair.
- Able to read, write and speak in English
- Available by phone during the study period
You are willing to:
- Participate in 5 study visits over a 4 month period
- Wear 2 small monitors that measure steps and movement
- Answer survey questions
- Complete 6 phone interviews about what you did the day before
- One blood draw (optional)
By finishing the study, you will receive up to $120 for your time and effort. If you are interested and would like more information, please contact us at: umass.sit@gmail.com or call the Physical Activity and Health Lab at 413-545-1583.

Andrea Morand of the University of Massachusetts Amherst is conducting her Master’s Thesis study examining the relationship between cognitive function and a newly developed measure of functional-living (Movement and Activity in Physical Space [MAPS] score). MAPS measures how older adults function in their real-world environment.
Eligibility criteria:
- Aged 65 years or older
- Ambulatory without aid
- Free of any conditions that affect walking (i.e., stroke, diabetes)
- Capable of completing a brief cognitive task at time of phone screening
1st Testing Session (1 hour):
- Informed Consent Document, demographic questionnaire, brief walking test, cognitive testing
- Activity monitors worn in between testing sessions to measure movement in real-world environment
2nd Testing Session (10 minutes)-One week later:
- Activity monitors will be returned
- Physical activity questionnaire and compensation forms completed
$15 compensation
