Exercise Science PhD program ranked 6th in country

November 10, 2005

The Department of Exercise Science has been ranked sixth in the nation in a survey of doctoral programs for 2004-05 conducted by the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. UMass Amherst was among 32 colleges and universities participating in the process.

The program was ranked sixth, preceded by the University of Connecticut and Penn State University, followed by Arizona State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Maryland. The rankings are based on reviews of faculty and student participation, along with funding and levels of professional activity.

Joseph Hamill, who chairs the department, says, “I am pleased to say that our department was ranked 6th of all departments who participated in the evaluation. We were one T-score point from being level with three other departments and only 4 points from the top ranked department.”

Founded in 1930, the AAKPE encourages and promotes the study and educational applications of the art and science of human movement and physical activity. It also honors individuals who directly or indirectly contributed significantly to the studies in the field.
