Treadmill. The Body Shop Fitness Center is an exercise opportunity which incorporates both aerobic and weight training equipment to help you achieve your fitness goals.

The Kinesiology Department of the University of Massachusetts Amherst sponsors and operates The Body Shop Fitness Center independently of the University recreation services. The Body Shop is open to all active and retired faculty, staff, and current students of the five-college community, their spouses, and all University alumni. Memberships may be purchased for each semester and during the summer and winter intersessions. Full semester memberships are pro-rated. Members have unlimited use of the Body Shop during all scheduled hours of operation seven days a week. Workout cards good for ten or twenty workouts may also be purchased.

The Body Shop Fitness Center is conveniently located on the University of Massachusetts campus in the Totman Building.

Workouts at the Body Shop are designed to develop your muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. This can be accomplished by various training regimens which incorporate strength and aerobic conditioning. Each member can proceed through a series of resistance-training stations arranged in a scientifically designed circuit for increasing both strength and aerobic endurance.

The Body Shop has equipment for various forms of strength and aerobic conditioning as described below:

We have a variety of safety-designed weight-training machines from Powerline™ and free weights which develop muscular strength and endurance as well as aerobic equipment such as LifeFitness™ stairclimbers and stationary bicycles, NordicTrack™ cross-country ski machines, Landice™ treadmills (rated the #1 treadmill of choice in the January 1996 issue of Runner's World), and Concept II™ rowing machines and two elliptical trainers designed to increase your aerobic fitness.

The workout room. A typical workout consists of a warm-up, several circuits of the resistance training equipment and a cool-down period. All this can take just thirty minutes. You can work out as often as you like, but we recommend a minimum of two workouts per week to maintain conditioning and more often if you are seeking improvements. Extended periods of time certainly may be spent on the bikes, rowing machines, treadmills, stair-climbers, and elliptical trainers.

The Body Shop is staffed primarily by students in Kinesiology who are knowledgeable in exercise theory and practice. They will demonstrate proper use of the equipment, encourage correct form, assist with workouts, and can help develop your personal fitness program. Members can sign up for an individual personal trainer who has been specifically prepared to work one on one with anyone interested in different types of exercise programs. This is arranged by calling the Body Shop office at 577-4700.

A free trial workout is offered for first time users. One of our staff members will guide you through a workout and answer your questions. This will provide you with an opportunity to decide, without obligation, if our approach to fitness is right for you.

Membership prices, dates and hours of operation, and general information may be obtained by calling the Body Shop at 577-4700. The Body Shop is closed when the University is closed for holidays and vacations. During emergency snow days, the Body Shop may be open contingent upon staff availability. Please call to ensure open hours.
