What is the Body Shop?

The Kinesiology Department of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst operates the Body Shop Fitness Center in Totman. The Body Shop is staffed by Kinesiology students who are knowledgeable in exercise theory and practice and is open to members of the community over 18 years of age.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Body Shop Fitness Center is to provide a clean and safe environment that supports the health and fitness needs of our diverse campus community and to meet the educational needs of students in the Kinesiology Department. The Body Shop works with students, faculty, and fitness industry leaders to conduct research as well as offer continuing education and programming related to healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Goals:

• Provide relevant learning opportunities and hands-on experience in various facets of fitness center operation for undergraduate students in the Kinesiology Department

• Provide accurate and up-to-date information on health and wellness issues

• Create opportunities for Body Shop members as well as members of the campus community to develop skills to improve and maintain health

New in Fall 2009

The Body Shop members will receive free fitness assessments and free fitness training!  Our Fitness Specialists have completed important Kinesiology coursework and are preparing for careers in the health/fitness industry.  Fitness Specialists will be available to perform walk-in fitness assessments, demonstrate proper use of equipment, provide exercise training programs, assist with workouts, and help you achieve your fitness goals.
