Graduate Programs

The Department of Kinesiology offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human physical activity, investigating the mechanical, neurological, biochemical, physiological and behavioral components of human movement. Health and well being outcomes of exercise and physical activity are considered for a variety of populations.

General Admission Requirements

All applicants must meet the general requirements of the Graduate School at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Admission decisions are based on a review of all application materials. TOEFL scores of 600 or higher (250 or higher on the computer based version) must be submitted by international applicants who are not native English speakers. Accepted M.S. students generally have undergraduate GPAs of at least a 3.0 and GRE scores of at least 1000 (including 500 or higher in the analytical section). Accepted Ph.D. students generally have GRE scores of at least 1200, with 600 or higher in the analytical section.

Financial Aid

Teaching and research assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Each assistantship includes a stipend, tuition waiver, and health-fee waiver, as well as a waiver of some student fees. A limited number of Graduate School fellowships are available on a competitive basis.
