Kinesiology ACSM Alumni Reception

The Department of Kinesiology will host its annual alumni reception during the 63rd Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in Boston, MA. The event will be held on Wednesday, June 1, from 5:00-9:00 pm in the Amherst Room of the UMass Club located at 1 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108.

This year the department will honor longtime faculty member Joseph Hamill, who is retiring after 30 years at UMass Amherst. Professor Hamill was Chair of the department for 11 years and Associate Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences for 6 years. He has been an invited speaker in many countries around the world, and during his academic career Hamill has mentored more than 25 doctoral students. He has authored or co-authored over 170 research papers, over 120 research proceedings, several book chapters and 3 books. Hamill is a member of numerous organizations including the American, Canadian, and International Societies of Biomechanics and the American College of Sports Medicine. He is a Fellow of ACSM, the Research Consortium, the Canadian Society of Biomechanics, the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports and the National Academy of Kinesiology.

27th Annual Beal Lecture

The Department of Nutrition will host the 27th Annual Virginia A. Beal Lecture on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Mullins Center.

Robert S. Chapkin, PhD, Distinguished Professor, University Faculty Fellow, Regents Fellow & AgriLife Senior Faculty Fellow at Texas A&M University will deliver the keynote lecture titled “Winning the Chemoprevention War: Reducing Inflammation through Nutrition” at 5:30 p.m.

The program will also feature a 4 p.m. poster session where Nutrition graduate students will share their research, and a 5 p.m. awards ceremony where the Department will present the Virginia A. Beal, Peter Pellett, and Helen Mitchell Awards.

The lecture bears the name of the late Professor Emerita Virginia A. Beal, a pioneer in the field of nutrition and a longtime member of the Nutrition faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Professor Beal established the endowment to provide students, faculty, dietetics professionals, and alumni and friends, with an opportunity to discuss the challenges and advances that are currently at the forefront in the Nutrition field.

An anticipated annual tradition, the Virginia A. Beal Lecture is a celebration of nutrition research and an opportunity to acknowledge the department’s finest students through the presentation of endowed scholarship awards, one of which bears Virginia A. Beal’s name. Professor Beal presented the first lecture in 1989, and in the intervening years, nationally-renowned researchers in nutrition have spoken at this annual event.

This year’s program is titled “From Neighborhood to Nation: Changing Policies to Improve Nutrition and Food Security.”

Donald (Diego) Rose, PhD, MPH, RD, Professor and Head of the Nutrition Section in the Department of Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences at Tulane University, will deliver the keynote lecture titled “The Food Policy Landscape: Improving Nutrition from Farm to Fork.” The program will also feature a panel discussion entitled “Policies to Promote Good Nutrition: Are We Doing Enough?” Panelists include Paula Serafino-Cross, MS, RD, LDN, a Staff Dietitian with Baystate Medical Center, who will address federal food and nutrition legislation and its implications for consumers and dietitians, and John Gerber, PhD, Professor of Sustainable Food and Farming with the UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture, who will address local policies to support local foods.
