Estelle Klasner-Nimni Memorial Library Established

The family of the late Estelle Klasner-Nimni (1958-2009) has established a memorial library in her honor in the Department of Communication Disorders. Dr. Klasner joined the faculty in the Department of Communication Disorders at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in September 2008. Her research focused on speech and language disorders associated with neurological impairment (with a particular focus on individuals with Huntington's disease), motor speech disorders, augmentative and alternative communication in adults, listener perspectives of impaired speech, and caregiver interactions with individuals with communication disorders. 

The Estelle Klasner-Nimni Memorial Library is located in Room 102C of the Communication Disorders Building and is open to faculty, students and alumni during normal business hours.

Dr. Richard Freyman elected to fellowship in the Acoustical Society of America

Dr. Richard L. Freyman, Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders was elected to fellowship in the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). His election to fellowship was recongized at an awards cermony held at the159th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and NOISE-CON 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland from April 19-23, 2010. Election to fellowship in the ASA is a distinction that is reserved for a very small minority of the Society's membership.

Speech-Language Pathology Faculty to appear on WGBY's "Doctor on Call"

Pat Mercaitis, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Mary Andrianopoulos, Ph.D., Associate Professor, and Shelley Velleman, Ph.D. Associate Professor, will be on the "Doctors on Call" live call-in TV show on Tuesday, March 23rd from 7:30-8:00 PM on WGBY, Springfield Public Broadcasting. The participants will be discussing their clinical interest areas and their work in the Center for Language, Speech and Hearing, here at UMASS Amherst. As part of the program format, the faculty will respond to callers on specific questions they may have regarding particular communication disorders.

Department Has Relocated

Over the summer of 2006, the Department of Communication Disorders relocated all of its faculty and staff offices, as well as the Center for Language, Speech and Hearing to a newly renovated facility located at 358 North Pleasant Street in Amherst, Massachusetts.  The department’s research laboratories are still located in Arnold House.
