Daniel S. Gerber is an Assistant Professor of Public Health and the Director of the Public Health Sciences Program. His teaching, research, and practice are in the area of community health and community building. He has over thirty years of international experience in planning, training/teaching and managing health education programs utilizing adult learning theory and methodology. His expertise is in: health education (child survival, HIV/AIDS prevention, family planning, maternal and child health, water and sanitation, and nutrition education), empowerment training and facilitation, evaluation of health programs, and cross-cultural training. He has been awarded the UMmass Distinguished Academic Outreach Teaching Award 2007, UMass School of Public Health and Health Sciences College Outstanding Teacher Award 2004-05, and the University Without Walls Outstanding Faculty Award – 2004. He has also been awarded two fellowships in Service-Learning, and Teaching and Learning in Diversity by the Center for Teaching.
Current research interests and professional practice include community health planning, development and evaluation, both in local communities and internationally. Best practices in teaching college students public health and adult education programs.
