Centers & Institutes
The School of Public Health and Health Sciences provides leadership in several centers and institutes that foster transdisciplinary research, teaching and service that spans the basic and applied sciences and public health, clinical practice and community applications. In addition to department-based centers, SPHHS hosts the following groups:
- The Center for Research and Education in Women's Health (CREWH) was established at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1997 to promote the health of women of all ages. CREWH is innovative in focusing on the prevention rather than the treatment of disease. It breaks ground in the range of disciplines it unites: the many UMASS schools and departments it draws on include Public Health, Kinesiology, Nutrition, Anthropology, Women's Studies and Nursing.
- The Institute for Global Health (IGH), reporting to the Vice Provost for Research, is committed to protecting and promoting the health of people throughout the world, especially those living in developing nations. Members of the institute include representatives of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences and the following Colleges, Schools and Departments: the Department of Management in the Isenberg School of Management; the School of Nursing; the Center for Public Policy and Administration; the Department of Sociology in the College of the Social & Behavioral Sciences; and the Departments of Plant, Soil, and Insect Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Veterinary & Animal Sciences, and Resource Economics in the College of Natural Resources and the Environment.
- The Biostatistics Consulting Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (BCCUMA) operates within the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Program in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences. It has access to a broad range of expertise in modern statistical practice to address all areas of research by drawing upon faculty within the School of Public Health and Health Sciences and in departments across campus.
- The Northeast Regional Environmental Public Health Center (NREPHC) was established in 1985 by the Commissioners of Public Health from the 7 Northeastern states, the Northeast Regional Environmental Public Health Center's (NREPHC) mission is to provide education and training, conduct research and make available consultative assistance in the environmental health arena.
In addition, the following Centers are operated from SPHHS departments:
Center for Language, Speech, and Hearing
The Center for Language, Speech and Hearing is dedicated to serving the speech, language, and hearing needs of the communicatively impaired child and adult.
Massachusetts Nutrient Data Bank
The MNDB offers the user the opportunity for comprehensive dietary, menu, and recipe evaluation for nutritional adequacy. A range of services can be tailored to the needs of the client without the necessity of purchasing hardware and/or software.
Nutrition Education Program (NEP)
NEP provides nutrition and food safety education to families, teachers, professionals, and other diverse groups throughout Massachusetts.
Center for Physical Activity & Wellness
The Center for Physical Activity and Wellness includes an exercise opportunity which incorporates both aerobic and weight training equipment to help participants achieve their fitness goals.
SPHHS faculty also conduct research interest groups in Healthy Aging and Obesity and Health, to foster collaborative research, teaching, and service programs.
