SPHHS to host Career Networking and Development Conference

The SPHHS will host a Career Networking and Development Conference on Tuesday, March 22nd. This daylong event is designed to help prepare students for the transition from college into the workforce. The event will feature panel discussions on big picture employment in public health and health sciences, roundtable networking sessions, and a vendor fair including organizations such as Baystate Health, Beacon ABA Services, Inc., Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Shriner's Hospital, and many more. The event will also include a special keynote presentation on public health at the federal, state, and local levels, UMass Career Services workshops, and mock interviews. The daylong event is co-sponsored by the SPHHS, Career Services, CMASS, and the Western MA Public Health Academic Consortium Group.

Graham selected as Public Engagement Faculty Fellow

Assistant Professor of Community Health Education Louis Graham is one of seven faculty members named Public Engagement Faculty Fellows by the Public Engagement Project. The fellowships are an initiative aimed at involving and teaching faculty to use their research to contribute to social change, inform public policy, and enrich public debate. Faculty fellows receive a stipend and technical training in communicating with non-academic audiences, and will also travel to Beacon Hill to share their research with lawmakers. Graham will use his research to enrich public discourse on social and health inequities, contributing to a more accurate and multi-faceted media portrayal of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender experiences.

Troy named Civic Engagement and Service-Learning Faculty Fellow

Lisa Troy, Assistant Professor of Nutrition, has been chosen by the Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning (CESL) as a 2016 CESL Faculty Fellow. She joins ten other UMass Amherst faculty members selected to receive the award, which helps fellows develop new CESL courses, integrating classroom learning with community-based learning. The CESL staff works with faculty members to develop civic engagement and service-learning courses, both through new courses and revising existing courses to integrate community engagement as a core component of the course. Troy is developing a course called "Sophomores Serve."

Public Health major Ellen Noble finishes sixth in Cyclocross World Championships

Public Health Sciences major Ellen Noble, who recently won the U.S. Cyclocross National Championship, finished sixth in the Cyclocross World Championships held in Zolder, Belgium on January 30. Noble, who is studying public health with the goal of combining her passion for cycling with her interest in helping others, was the top American finisher of the day. Noble had a very fast start in the race, according to a JAM Fund Cycling account of the contest, but on one of the turns slipped back to ninth place. Over the remaining laps Noble worked her way forward again, and moved up to finish sixth. "I'm extremely happy for this hard-fought result on such a demanding and soaking wet course," Noble said.

April 5, 2016: SPHHS Research Day

The SPHHS will hold its 19th Annual Research Day on Tuesday, April 5th. The School holds this event, celebrated annually during National Public Health Week, as an opportunity for the campus community to learn more about the research, instruction and outreach conducted by its students. Students from all departments in the SPHHS will present posters of their work which will be judged based on content and presentation. Awards are made in Research and Practice categories, and one award will be presented by the Delta Omega Honor Society.
