Andrea Foulkes, Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Director of the Institute for Computational Biology, Biostatistics, and Bioinformatics (ICB3), is profiled with SPHHS faculty members Nicholas Reich and Raji Balasubramanian and postdoctoral researchers Gregory Matthews and Ujwall Das in a new feature story on the ICB3 appearing on the Research Next website. The ICB3 is analyzing "big" life science data in the pursuit of new discoveries.

Kinesiology Study Stirs Up Runners' Debate

Over the past few years, it’s grown increasingly common to see runners hitting the streets and trails, and attacking the 5k, half and full marathon race courses, while running barefoot or sporting minimalist footwear such as Vibram’s FiveFingers model. These runners advocate what they call a “natural” running pattern in which the runner strikes the ground first with the forefoot rather than with the more traditional rearfoot, or heel-to-toe, running style which is more commonly used.

Calabrese Awarded Honorary Degree

Edward Calabrese, Professor of Environmental Health Sciences, was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) by McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. Calabrese accepted the degree on June 11, 2013, at the Spring Convocation for the School of Nursing and Medical Radiation Sciences Program.

Sullivan-Werner Receives Chancellor's Citation for Excellence

Lisa Sullivan-Werner, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP-Ed) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Leader, and Interim Director of the UMass Extension Nutrition Education Program (NEP), recently received one of ten Chancellor’s Citation Awards for 2013. Chancellor Subbaswamy honored Sullivan-Werner, along with the other Citation recipients and the Gerald F. Scanlon Student Employee of the Year award winners, at a reception held on May 1, 2013, in the Marriott Center.

Undergraduate Public Health Students Promote Service to the Community

At the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, the undergraduate public health sciences degree program has been designed to provide opportunities for students to be engaged with the community – whether through community service, service learning, internships, community-based research or other forms of community engagement. Approximately 60% of SPHHS students participate in some form of community service or volunteer work, and an equal number take part in an internship or field work.

Kinesiology students assist with ROTC Cadet Fitness Training

Students in the Department of Kinesiology provided free fitness training for Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadets across the Five College system. The program, implemented by Kinesiology lecturer Judi LaBranche, proved to be a tremendous benefit to student trainers and trainees alike.

Nutrition alumna Nilofer Safdar, PhD '12, Appointed Assistant Professor and Director of Nutritional Sciences Program

Nilofer SafdarIn March 2013, Nutrition alumna Nilofer Safdar, PhD ’12, joined the newly opened School of Public Health at Dow University of Health Sciences in Pakistan as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Nutritional Sciences program. Located in Karachi, Dow University is one of the oldest and largest health sciences universities in Pakistan.
