SPHHS Celebrates Class of 2013

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences held its Senior Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. The SPHHS ceremony recognized the undergraduate class of 2013, which this year welcomed over 500 graduating seniors into its ranks.

SPHHS Salutes Internship Sponsors and Community Partners

Service was the focus at a recent awards banquet held by the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) at the Campus Center. Over 100 people gathered at the Campus Center for the Celebration of Service Breakfast. Amongst the attendees were current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the SPHHS from the community.

SPHHS researchers get $3.64 million from state Gaming Commission to study gambling impacts

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has selected a School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) research team to perform a comprehensive, multi-year $3.64 million research project, believed to be the first of its kind, on the economic and social impacts of introducing casino gambling in Massachusetts. It will focus particularly on problem gambling, but also examine a wide array of social and economic effects of expanded gambling in Massachusetts.

Chasan-Taber Named UMass Amherst "Spotlight Scholar"

Lisa Chasan-Taber, Professor of Epidemiology, has been selected as the new UMass Amherst "Spotlight Scholar." She's being featured on the university's homepage and Research Next website, where she is being hailed as an international expert shedding light on physical activity and pregnancy.

Kinesiology Department to Host 3rd International Conference on Ambulatory Monitoring of Physical Activity and Movement

The Department of Kinesiology will be hosting the 3rd International Conference on Ambulatory Monitoring of Physical Activity and Movement (ICAMPAM) from June 17-19, 2013. The conference will provide an international forum for researchers, clinicians, technologists and users to explore the latest advances and view the newest technologies in the field of ambulatory and sleep monitoring as well as offering our industry partners the opportunity to introduce their products to an audience of users and discuss future developments.

CDC Speaker Highlights Diabetes Prevention & Management Seminar and Panel Discussion

Carl Caspersen, Ph.D., an expert in physical activity and diabetes at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, was the keynote speaker at a Diabetes Prevention and Management Seminar and Panel Discussion held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on October 22, 2012, at the Marriott Center on campus. The event – the first in a planned series sponsored by the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) and ENVIRON, a global science, technology and health consulting firm with offices in Amherst – was open to the public and drew a diverse audience including SPHHS faculty and students, local community health professionals, and concerned individuals.

Alumni Profile: Kristin Chenevert, M.S. '05

Kristin (Lefebvre) Chenevert received her M.S. in Nutrition from UMass Amherst in 2005. She works for Plus One Health Management, Inc., as an on-site Wellness Specialist for Ocean Spray Cranberries’ corporate office in Lakeville, MA, where she designed and runs Ocean Spray’s Fit for Life Wellness Program.
