Q: How do I get an application? (return to top of page)

A: You can request application material online at the Graduate School web site; by writing the Graduate School, 530 Goodell Building, University of Massachusetts, 140 Hicks Way, Amherst, MA 01003-9333; or by calling the University at (413) 545-0722.

Q: What are the deadlines for applying? (return to top of page)

A: Applications to the Biostatistics and Epidemiology concentrations must be received by:

  • Fall: February 1
  • Spring: October 1 - Spring admission to the Amherst M.P.H. or M.S. degree program considered only if course requirements noted below have been fulfilled*
  • Summer: There is no summer term

*Please note that all M.P.H. and M.S. applicants for Spring semester admission must have completed the following courses:

  • Biostatistics program - PUBHLTH 540, PUBHLTH 691F, and STATISTC 515, or equivalent graduate level courses.
  • Epidemiology program - PUBHLTH 540 and PUBHLTH 630, or equivalent graduate level courses.

The Amherst Ph.D. program accepts Fall and Spring admissions.

The Worcester M.P.H. program accepts Fall and Spring admissions.

Q: What are the admission requirements? (return to top of page)

A: We require that all applicants take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and that foreign applicants take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). In addition, the admission decision is based on the applicant's grades in undergraduate and graduate courses, letters of recommendation, and personal statement. Nearly all successful applicants' test scores and Grade Point Average (GPA) exceed:

There are no specific undergraduate courses required for admission.

B: Each PhD. applicant in Epidemiology should submit in addition to a statement of interest, detailed information on his/her background and competencies, and indicate areas of preferred major and minor content.

Q: How will I know whether or not I have been accepted? (return to top of page)

A: Admission decisions are forwarded to the Graduate School, and the Graduate School will send letters to applicants by mail confirming the decision. This process will be completed as quickly as possible.
