General Information

The Summer Program in Salamanca, which runs during the month of July, offers participants an opportunity to take courses in language, literature, culture and linguistics. To accommodate all the different Spanish language levels of the participants the Program is sub-divided into three different programs:

• Program A: Intensive Undergraduate Language and Culture Program (9 credits). Maximum enrollment in language classes is 15 per class. Level (medio, medio alto, avanzado, superior) in Program A is determined by previous language instruction and also by placement exam taken on July 2 in Salamanca. Students who successfully complete Program A will fulfill the foreign language requirement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. One semester of college-level Spanish or equivalent with a minimum of a B, and a 2.5 GPA minimum is required of all participants in Program A. High school seniors will be considered.

• Program B: Advanced Undergraduate and Graduate Program in Literature, linguistics and Culture (6 credits)

• Program C: Graduate Program in Literature, linguistics and Culture (6 credits)

The Summer Program in Salamanca has been in existence for 30 years. Its success is attributed to the excellence of the students who have participated in the program as well as to the high caliber of the teaching staff. Usually, seventy percent of our students come from the Amherst campus and the other thirty from many other colleges and universities in the United States. The Program has had participants from such varied places as UCLA, University of Michigan, Ohio University, Yale, Brown, Princeton, Penn, MIT, Boston University, Tufts, University of Texas at Austin, Harvard, Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Vanderbilt University, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Providence College, University of Oregon, Queens College, etc. Students will receive instruction directly through the University of Massachusetts Summer Program in Salamanca or at the Hispano Continental Language Institute, a private institution in Salamanca that specializes in teaching Spanish language to foreign students. The Institute and the city of Salamanca attract students from all over the world and therefore our students enjoy the opportunity to interact, both inside and outside the classroom, with people from many different countries.

  • Located in Salamanca, the Program has the advantages of a large cosmopolitan area rich in artistic and historical monuments. The city is also known as one of the most important cultural and intellectual centers of Spain. The University of Salamanca founded by Alfonso IX in 1218 is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe.
  • Should you now be receiving financial aid, your institution will most probably make it available for study abroad. Consult with your financial aid office about procedures to follow.
  • You can download and print all application materials for the Program. They are available in PDF format in this site (ready-to-print document readable with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader).
