Graduate Program Applications

The mission of our graduate program in Spanish and Portuguese is to promote the study of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds, while upholding a deep commitment to fostering cultural and intellectual diversity. With broad course offerings leading to M.A. and PhD degrees, students are encouraged to pursue their particular interests under the guidance of a diverse and dedicated faculty.


The deadline for application to the graduate programs (MA and Ph.D.) is February 1, for admission the following fall semester (the department admits new students for Fall only). Applications must be made directly to the Graduate School. Details about the application process, and online application forms, are available through the Graduate School webiste. Applications are sent directly to the Graduate School, but admissions decisions are made by the Spanish & Portuguese Graduate Studies' Committee. Complete applications must include the following:

  1. Application form
  2. Application fee
  3. Personal statement
  4. Official transcripts
  5. GRE General Test
  6. Writing Sample (an Academic Term Paper)
  7. Letters of Recommendation (at least two)

Massachusetts residents must also submit a residency statement to qualify for in-state tuition. Some US permanent residents and international applicants must submit TOEFL scores.

Writing Sample

Applicants to the graduate program should submit a writing sample of up to 30 pages. Samples should be submitted in PDF form directly to the Graduate School with the application. For more information, see our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Personal Statement

Most Personal Statements run about 2 pages, single-spaced. The purpose of this element of the application is to enable the admissions committee to assess the degree to which the applicant's intellectual aims and career objectives fit with the interestes and strengths of our faculty and program.

Financial Aid

Applicants to our graduate programs who check off the appropriate box in the Graduate School application form are automatically considered for Teaching Assistantships or Associateships at the time their applications are reviewed. The review is carried out by the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) and the Graduate Program Director (GPD) of Spanish and Portuguese.
