General Information
Located in Granada
, this intensive Spanish program runs from late August
to early December. Granada is located 300 miles south
of Madrid, close to renowned ski and beach resorts. The
city is noted for its Moorish history and buildings including
the famous Alhambra . The weather is very mild during
the fall.
This program offers fourteen weeks of intensive Spanish
instruction, from Monday to Friday, at the don Quijote
Institute in Granada. Maximum enrollment in language
courses is eight students per class.
Students participate in many
cultural
and social activities and live with Spanish families.
Knowledge of Spanish
No previous knowledge of Spanish is necessary to participate in this program.
Course offerings
Students may earn up to 15 University of Massachusetts undergraduate credits in Spanish Language and Culture, and can fulfill the language requirement by attending this program.
The program offers intensive language and culture instruction, during 14 weeks.
Students with no previous instruction in Spanish may take the equivalent of the first four semesters of college Spanish (SPAN 110 through 240), as well as Spanish Conversation (SPAN 301). Students who enter the program after having taken one semester of Spanish (SPAN 110), may take the equivalent of three semesters of language (120 through 240) as well as Spanish conversation (SPAN 301) and Spanish Culture (SPAN 415).
Students who have already completed the first two years of Spanish language courses may take SPAN 311 or/and SPAN 312, SPAN 320, SPAN 321 and en elective (400 level) on Federico García Lorca.
Level of students is determined by previous course work and by testing upon arrival at Granada.

Dates and Cost
The program runs from late August to early December.
Estimated costs for 2008 are $9,500 for in-state Massachusetts Public Higher Education students, out-of-state Massachusetts Public Higher Education students, and all others.

Program cost includes

- $750 Education Abroad Fee (to IPO)

- Lodging with host families with full board and laundry service included

- Direct supervision by a UMass resident coordinator on-site
- All administrative expenses covered (processing of application, etc.)
- Orientation meetings at UMass before students leave for Spain
- Fourteen weeks of instruction at the don Quijote Institute in Granada, from Monday to Friday.
- Activities during stay in Granada, such as:
- Intercambio (conversation with Spanish natives)
- Weekly Spanish movies as offered by don Quijote
- Welcome and farewell dinner
- Don Quijote's Welcome Information Packet
- Multimedia salon with e-mail connection
- Free reception of faxes
- The rental of a cell phone for students' personal use
Travel to and from the U.S. is not included
Should you now be receiving financial aid, your institution will most probably make it available for study abroad. Consult with your financial aid office about procedures to follow.

Visa: The Spanish government requires that US citizens studying in Spain obtain a visa before departure from the US from a Spanish Consulate

Submit all supporting documents and/or items as indicated on the checklist. Make sure you keep copies for yourself of all forms.
Completed application materials, including a $500 deposit (check or money order payable to: University of Massachusetts) should be submitted by April 15. This deposit is non reimbursable once accepted to the program. Since enrollment is limited, early application is recommended.
