2008 Summer Program in Salamanca, Spain
July 1-31, 2008

ACTIVITIES

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

The program budgets each student approximately 30 euros for cultural activities in Salamanca. Students may attend theatrical productions and concerts, go to the cinema, or take dance lessons from native Spaniards. While in Salamanca students may also have the opportunity to listen to “Tunas,” traditional musical groups from universities that play and sing folkloric music in the Plaza Mayor. A complete list of cultural activities will be provided in students’ orientation packets on the bus ride from Madrid to Salamanca on July 1. Once in Salamanca, the Program will keep students informed of events and cultural activities taking place through posters in the dorm and outside the UMass office. If students choose not to take advantage of cultural activities, their money is absorbed into the program; they will not get a refund.

EXCURSIONS

There are three excursions organized by the University of Massachusetts Summer Program to historical towns. Offerings this July will include the following excursions:

  • an excursion to Lisbon on July 11-13 (partially subsidized by the program and limited to 45-50 students for technical reasons),

       Universidad de Coimbra

  • a three-day excursion to Galicia, Northwest Spain, or Andalucía, Southern Spain (Sevilla, Granada and Córdoba) on July 17-20.

     Mezquita de Córdoba

     Catedral de Sevilla

  • Students can participate in other excursions at their own expense to Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia, etc. The fourth weekend of the program, after exams, may be used for this purpose, though you may certainly also explore Salamanca in greater depth as well.
