Introduction

This document provides an overview of computing facilities at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, with emphasis on resources available for graduate students in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) and School of Nursing. Computing facilities with campus-wide access are available through the Office of Information Technologies (OIT). Additional computer facilities, limited to use by graduate students in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences and the School of Nursing, are available in the SPHHS Computer Lab, Arnold House room 413, 417, 419. Computer access is often available in individual departments or through computers on research projects and grants. Finally, many graduate students (over 50%) own (or have access to) private personal computers. n Facilities

Campus Wide Facilities

The Office of Information Technologies (OIT) provides telecommunications and general computing and networking to students, faculty, and staff at the university. The OIT username (NetID) provides e-mail, Internet access, access to OITUNIX host computers, the UDrive, and to OIT's PC classrooms at the university. All students must have an active OIT NetID.

Students who pre-register for classes get their OIT NetID in the mail. If you did not pre-register, or did not get your OIT NetID, go to Lederle Graduate Research Center (LGRC) low rise Room A113 to get an OIT NetID. You'll need to bring your UCard (University ID) for identification. See here for more details relating to OIT accounts.

OIT provides computer classrooms for faculty using computer technology in their coursework. Students, faculty and staff may use the computer facilities for homework (or other University-related work) when a class is not scheduled. The university has 11 microcomputer classrooms and labs, 8 with Windows platforms and 3 with MAC platforms. A complete list of computer lab locations can be found on the OIT web site ( http://www.oit.umass.edu/classrooms/info/locations.html ). Hours of computer lab operation are announced by OIT during the first weeks of the semester. These facilities are shared by all university students on a first-come, first serve basis. You will need to use a 3.5" diskette, zip disk, or the UDrive to save your work. Work can not be stored on the hard drives of OIT machines. Always make a backup copy of your work.

Computer Facilities with Access Restricted to Graduate Students in the SPHHS

Lab Facilities
The SPHHS computer lab has 15 Windows XP machines in Arnold House rooms 413, 417, 419. Lab computers are for use by research assistants, graduate students and students taking graduate level courses in the school. Computers are available on a first-come, first serve basis except that Research Assistants working on their assigned research projects have priority to the computers in room 419.

Room 419 has free desk space with internet connections for use with laptops.

Computer Lab facilities are available for use 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Room access is by combination door locks. Computer access requires a username/password. If you need building access in order to use the computers evenings and weekends, contact Jim Kierstead in Arnold House, room 119 to register for a key to Arnold House.

Lab Software
The computers are networked, and share common software and 2 printers. They are connected to the fiber optic university network backbone to provide fast internet access.

Lab Protocol
Students are expected to be familiar with and to comply with the lab protocol.

Purchasing a Computer/Software

Some students purchase a computer for their own use. General guidelines for computer purchases are given on the OIT web site http://www.oit.umass.edu/hardware/min-rec/index.html .

The university has site licenses for certain software that can be downloaded or purchased at discount rates. See http://www.oit.umass.edu/software/index.html
